Dentures

Dentures created at Cottonwood Dental Associates are removable, natural-looking replacement teeth. There are two types of dentures: complete and partial. There is also a newly emerging type of denture that is supported by implants. Note that dentures are a replacement for your own teeth, and they are often the last option.

Types of Dentures

We use complete dentures when all your natural teeth are missing. Dentures are referred to as “conventional” when we place them after the teeth have been removed and your gum tissue has had a chance to heal. This may take several months.

Dentures that are placed immediately after removal of your teeth are known as “immediate.” Immediate dentures usually require frequent adjustments for the first few months because the shape of your jaw can change somewhat as your mouth heals from the extraction.

Partial dentures are a removable alternative to bridges. They may be used to replace a few teeth in one area of your mouth, or they can be designed to fill in missing teeth in different parts of your mouth.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are complete dentures that are anchored to your jaw with multiple dental implants. This is a more ideal option because the implants aid in holding the denture in place, offer additional stability, and improve your overall ability to chew normally.

If you have older dentures that don’t fit properly, you probably experience frustration as they slip and shift – always at the most embarrassing moments! Traditional non-implant supported dentures only provide approximately 15% of normal chewing ability while studies show that implant-supported dentures can reestablish up to 95% of your chewing strength.

Why Choose Dentures?

Gaps in your smile can have a huge impact on your self-confidence and your ability to enjoy life to its fullest. If you’re living with gaps in your smile, you probably already know that chewing and speaking clearly can be challenging.

Natural teeth also provide support for your face, especially around your mouth, lips, and cheeks. If you lose one or more teeth, your face can gradually take on a sunken appearance, making you appear older.

With dentures in place, your cheeks and gums are supported, reducing the appearance of sagging facial muscles and giving you a more youthful appearance.
