Crowns and Bridges
In Salt Lake City, UT
You can think of a crown as a "hat" for your tooth.
Living with damaged teeth detracts from your ability to enjoy life in many ways. A damaged tooth is unattractive, and you probably feel self-conscious about your appearance. You may also have difficulty chewing and even speaking properly.
A crown is a restoration that we might use to improve the appearance of a damaged tooth or to restore a tooth damaged by fracture, wear, or excessive decay. You can think of a crown as a cap or “hat” for your tooth. Unlike a hat, however, it covers the entire tooth surface.
Crowns are needed when the natural tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a filling. The crown is bonded securely onto an existing tooth and completely covers the visible portion of your tooth. Basically, the crown acts as the new outer layer of your tooth.
How Dental Crowns Work
To make room for the crown, we have to remove enough tooth material so that it will fit nicely in your mouth and feel similar to or better than the original tooth.
We create fillings by applying the restorative material directly into your mouth, but dental crowns are prosthetics that are fabricated outside your mouth. A crown usually requires two appointments to complete – one to prepare the tooth and make a temporary restoration, and one to cement the crown on permanently.
Crowns can be made of metal (like gold or silver), porcelain, or a combination of metal and porcelain. Oftentimes, when you have part of your tooth break off, you will require a crown to rebuild it properly. Alternatively, if you don’t like the look of your front teeth due to the color or shape, we can create an esthetic crown or a veneer. Your crown is custom-made in a dental lab using impressions we take of the tooth.
This creates an accurate representation of your mouth, which allows a skilled dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements. The new crown is then carefully shaped to our exact specifications to ensure that your bite functions properly once the crown is placed.
